The first Power Five school
The University of Utah is launching a varsity esports program sponsored by the University’s EAE video game development program.
“Esports has had a dramatic rise in popularity in the U.S. over the last few years – especially on college campuses,” said A.J. Dimick, director of operations for the U’s new esports program. “We think college esports is a great opportunity and we want our students to be part of it.”
League of Legends will be the first supported game, but the school plans on having multiple teams. Crimson Gaming, the student club team, played an integral role in creating the program. Power Five schools represent the most recognizable college names in traditional sports and Dimick hopes this new program will inspire more Power Five schools to launch teams.
